Our History

Together Church launched as a new community in March 2019, with a vision to connect with people who don’t normally attend a church.

Previously, the group had operated as a missional organisation, for seventeen years, under the name Third Place Communities (abbreviated as TPC).

TPC was birthed in September 2001 by a group of young people with a collective calling to share life and faith together as local missionaries in Hobart.

They were heavily shaped by the teachings of Alan Hirsch, Michael Frost, Mark Sayers, Milton Oliver, Darryn Altclass and others from the Forge network.

The original group gathered for more than a decade in third places (social spaces) and shared life in cafes, pubs and jazz venues around Hobart. They met in homes, in parks, on beaches, and in playgrounds (following the birth of a bundle of babies). The group grew in size, then lost momentum, then gained it again. They laughed, cried, succeeded, failed and loved… again and again!

Eventually, the leadership team discerned a call to launch a new church community (in a more traditional sense). While the name is new, the culture of Together Church has been shaped by seventeen years of local mission. We continue to identify ourselves as sent people, and as local missionaries, with a call to practice hospitality and make disciples wherever they are.
